A-Z of Health Z – Zonked Out
Yes, another tenuous link for the letter Z. By zonked out I am referring to the long-term side effects of oxidative stress on the body and what often happens when people ignore the subtle warning signs of their body trying to tell them to slow down!
If you listen to your body when it whispers you will never have to listen to it scream!
I often talk in my webinars and with clients about the wonderful world of antioxidants and what they do for us. For the purposes of this A-Z post I am referring to the damage that can take place when we are under a lot of external and internal stress and not combatting this with adequate antioxidants.
I also talk about free radicals, many of you will have witnessed my drawings of atoms, electrons and the explanations of electron donation versus electrons being pinched! You will have to talk to me on that separately!
If there are too many free radicals (Reactive Oxygen Species/ROS) and not enough antioxidants to respond to them oxidative stress can occur. You may not realise you are suffering from oxidative stress but these are some of the symptoms: –
- Brain fog/confusion/diminished brain function
- Joint pain
- Decreased eye sight
- Frequent infections
These may sound familiar to many as we tend to put up with feeling like this most of the time but these are all indications that your body is trying to talk to you.
What happens if you don’t listen?
The more serious consequences of oxidative stress over a longer time period are: –
- Chronic fatigue syndrome
- Adrenal fatigue
- Leaky gut
Oxidative Stress = build -up of bad food, stress, poor sleep, chemicals, overuse of medication, alcohol.
How to avoid oxidative stress = antioxidants, clean foods, exercise, relaxing, sleep, being chemical free (as much as possible!).
People often don’t prioritise their health, saying they are too busy, too stressed, it isn’t enough of an issue for me, yes, I have been told “It just doesn’t interest me enough”. The fact that their own health didn’t interest them enough baffled me but shortly after that conversation they received a warning from their Dr and then did come to me. Suddenly their health was of interest but it took a health issue first.
Yes, ok so zonked out isn’t a medical term but oxidative stress is real and the symptoms may indeed make you feel zonked out. Please don’t wait for your body to scream, or for a GP to scream on its’ behalf. Listen to the whispers, look out for the signs and talk to me, I can help get you back on track.
